Project Scope
CTS was engaged to deliver a 6ft open cut track drainage renewal at Farringdon Platform as part of London Underground’s Ballasted Track Renewals programme. The works comprised installation of approximately 122 m of new half-perforated 280 mm OD SDR11 PE80 drainage pipe, construction of three new chambers, associated excavation and reinstatement, pumping and decommissioning of existing catchpits where required, and pre- and post-works CCTV surveys. All works were undertaken in accordance with LU Civil Engineering and drainage standards.

Delivery
The works were delivered over two 52-hour possessions, fully integrated with London Underground’s adjacent track renewal programme. CTS worked seamlessly alongside the LUL Track Renewals team, aligning programmes, sequencing activities, and coordinating access to ensure efficient delivery within the restricted possession windows.
- CTS managed all aspects of the drainage installation, including:
- Management of temporary works design and implementation, including trench shoring within the 6ft.
- Excavation and installation of new drainage pipework to correct line and level.
- Construction and benching of new drainage chambers.
- Pumping and decommissioning of redundant catchpits where required.
- Jetting and CCTV surveys of laterals and downstream drainage runs.
- Coordination of excavation and reinstatement activities with adjacent track renewal works to support safe and timely handback.
- Completion of reinstatement and submission of as-built documentation in accordance with LU requirements.

Outcome
The project successfully renewed life-expired drainage infrastructure while enabling concurrent track renewal works to proceed without disruption. Through collaborative planning, integrated delivery, and effective management of temporary works, both drainage and track scopes were completed safely within the planned possessions, achieving full compliance with LU technical, safety, and assurance standards.
