Project Overview
CTS has delivered a multi-year integrated civils and infrastructure package at Northfields Depot and Sidings as part of the Piccadilly Line Upgrade (PLU).
The works span MEP installations, lineside civils, structural retention, security infrastructure, drainage, access improvements, and UTX installations – all delivered within a live London Underground environment under highly restricted access conditions.

Project Scope
- MEP & CRMS Infrastructure
- 24 cast in-situ reinforced concrete bases
- 18 precast concrete bases
- 400m+ of CRMS installation
- 100m of troughing
- 24 screw anchor piles
- Installation of transformer kiosk bases and associated ancillaries
- Installation, testing and commissioning of ATS and transformers
- UTX & Chamber Installation
- Development of constructable delivery methodology
- Introduction of precast chamber solutions
- Reduction of HAVS, manual handling, and silica exposure
- Ongoing innovation and cost-saving initiatives
- Embankment & Access Improvements
- Regrading and reconstruction of 135m embankment
- Erosion protection systems (Greenax Tecmat & Deltax)
- Drainage gully raising and installation
- 180m of Handrail
- Walkway formation and safe access routes
- Sheet Pile Retention Works
- Installation of sheet piles to provide ballast and structural retention for new sidings
- Setting out and logistics management within a rail-locked site
- Phased weekend delivery integrated with other civils packages
- Security & Boundary Infrastructure
- Installation of approximately 425m of 3.5m security fencing
- Cylindrical pile foundations with cast-in stub columns
- Installation against sheet pile interfaces
- Raptor systems and associated CRMS integration
- Minor civils associated with fence line

Delivery
All works were delivered within live railway constraints, utilising weekend possessions, engineering hours, and in some cases access windows as short as one hour per shift.
CTS worked collaboratively with Balfour Beatty, LU Signals, LU Access, and design teams to develop compliant, buildable solutions across legacy infrastructure constraints.
Innovative approaches – including precast solutions and use of mobile boom pumps for in-situ concrete placement – improved installation speed, quality, and workforce safety by reducing manual handling and silica exposure. The programme continues to support the wider Piccadilly Line Upgrade through phased delivery of critical depot and sidings infrastructure.
