Project Scope
CTS was appointed to deliver the replacement of life-expired bridge track support brackets on the historic Rochester Bridge, a critical structure within Network Rail’s infrastructure. The works involved removal of existing components and installation of a new support system to ensure continued structural integrity and operational safety.
The scope included:
- Removal of the existing 4ft walkway and life-expired track support brackets.
- Precision drilling of existing longitudinal bridge supports.
- Preparation of structural steelwork for installation.
- Installation of new track support brackets and associated fixings to track sleepers.
- Replacement of the walkway with a new GRP system.

Delivery
The works were delivered over a series of weekend and nightly track possessions to minimise disruption to rail operations. CTS developed a staged execution plan to optimise possession time and manage multiple stakeholder interfaces.
CTS managed all aspects of delivery, including:
- Detailed possession planning and coordination with third-party contractors operating engineering trains and rail-mounted plant.
- Integration of works alongside planned track maintenance activities to ensure seamless programme alignment.
- Management of temporary works solutions to address open bridge deck voids and maintain safe access throughout the project.
- Implementation of robust safety controls to mitigate risks associated with DC current, operational railway interfaces, working at height, and gaps between elevated sleepers.
- Progressive quality assurance through Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) checks, hold points, and witness points at critical stages.

Outcome
The project was delivered safely and efficiently within constrained possessions, ensuring the successful replacement of life-expired bridge support infrastructure. The scheme demonstrates CTS’ capability to manage complex structural works in live rail environments within the £100k–£500k value range, maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and programme control.
